From One Mile to 26.2, Broadway Runs for Broadway Cares

Broadway brought its passion and perseverance to the streets of New York City, transforming race day into a powerful show of community in support of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.

On September 7, 2025, Broadway performers and theater professionals took part in the first-ever Broadway Mile at the New Balance 5th Avenue Mile. Created in partnership with New York Road Runners and The Broadway League, the exclusive heat united actors, producers, stage managers, musicians, stagehands and crew members for a one-mile run along Museum Mile before Sunday matinees began.

Among the runners were Broadway favorites Sierra Boggess, Jordan Fisher, Jeremy Jordan, Jordan Litz and Patina Miller, as well as runners representing The Book of Mormon, Cabaret, Heathers, Little Shop of Horrors, Mamma Mia!, Maybe Happy Ending and more.

The Broadway Mile raised $16,482, with Litz finishing first in the heat. The fastest female finisher was the Public Theater’s Hannah McGrath, and the top nonbinary runner was The Book of Mormon’s Thomas Doelger. Mamma Mia! was the fastest overall team.

The fall running season continued on November 2, 2025, at the TCS New York City Marathon, where a team of 20 runners took on the iconic 26.2-mile course to benefit Broadway Cares. Broadway stars who participated in the marathon included Litz, currently Fiyero in Wicked, and Merle Dandridge, recently seen as Persephone in Hadestown. The team raised more than $145,200 for lifesaving meals, medication, health care and hope.

Litz capped off an extraordinary day by returning to the Gershwin Theatre to perform both the matinee and evening performances of Wicked after completing the marathon, a remarkable example of the endurance and generosity that define the Broadway community.

Actor Erik Lochtefeld was recognized as one of four inaugural winners of the Citizens Miles that Matter Award. The honor celebrated his community impact, selfless service, resilience and inspiration. Lochtefeld recently underwent surgery to remove a brain tumor, and ran the race to embody the resilient spirit of New Yorkers. Citizens recognized Lochtefeld with a generous $26,200 grant to Broadway Cares.
