BENEFITTING BROADWAY CARES EQUITY FIGHTS AIDS

(New York, NY – Tuesday, October 3, 2006) – Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids(BC/EFA) in association with GoFigure Productions present a one night only performance of John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask’s Off-Broadway Smash HitHEDWIG and the ANGRY INCH on Monday October 30th at 8PM.  This Halloween benefit for BC/EFA will once again feature David Colbert in the title role and Petra DeLuca in her gender-bending role as Hedwig’s lover, Yitzhak. This year, the show moves downtown to the newly renovated Player’s Theater at 115 MacDougal Streetin the heart of the West Village.

Since the SOLD OUT benefit performance last year at the York Theater, Colbert and DeLuca have performed in Sarasota, FL, where David was named Best Actor in a musical by the Sarasota Herald Tribune, and in Lexington, KY, where the entire company was inducted by Governor Ernie Fletcher into the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the highest honor awarded in the state.

As Hedwig, David Colbert brought audiences to their feet with his impassioned portrayal of the German-born rocker who survived a botched sex-change operation to become an over-the-top rock diva in the spirit of Freddie Mercury with Farrah Fawcett tresses. Since 2002, between the two of them, Colbert and DeLuca have taken their portrayals to Philadelphia, Wilmington, New York, Milwaukee, Sarasota, and Lexington. During the course of their travels, Colbert and DeLuca have garnered several theatrical awards for their regional performances of Hedwig, including the 2004 Barrymore award forOutstanding Lead Actor in a Musical for their performance with City Theater Company.  Joining Colbert and DeLuca on stage as the “Angry Inch” will be – Joe Trainor, Chris Gordon, Tim Cleary and Michael Doroff.  The production will be directed by Michael Grey.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch tells the story of an “internationally ignored” rock singer, Hedwig, and her search for love and stardom. Born a boy named Hansel whose life’s dream is to find his other half, Hedwig reluctantly submits to a sex change operation in order to marry an American G.I. and get over the Berlin Wall to freedom. The operation is botched, leaving her with the aforementioned “angry inch.” Finding herself high, dry and divorced in a Kansas trailer park, she pushes on to form a rock band and encounters a lover/protégé in young Tommy Gnosis, who eventually leaves her, steals her songs and becomes a huge rock star. Hedwig presents an absorbing narrative of Plato’s Symposium and the fierce battle of self acceptance with love found, lost and found again, supported by the blistering, punk-fueled rock of a fictional Eastern European band,

All seats are $50 which will benefit Broadway Cares / Equity Fights AIDS
