Inspired Student Creates A-List

Commack High School junior Simon Pincus (who has appeared on Broadway in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas), has created ALIST, the Alliance of Long Island Students of Theatre, to raise funds for theatre-related charities.  Although the organization is guided by Simon’s mom, a Hauppauge theatre teacher, ALIST is entirely student-driven, including nine who sit on its Board of Directors.

Thankfully, Simon, who is a member of both the International Thespian Society and NYSTEA, has elected to launch his student-run initiative with a benefit for Broadway Cares.

The event is called “ALIST Night of Theatre” and is being held on Saturday, April 10th, at the Suffolk Y JCC in Commack, New York.

The show will give the students on Long Island the opportunity to perform for and with one another, while at the same time raising funds for BC/EFA.

Says Simon, “I’ve always been involved in the arts as well as community service and I want to bring this same spirit to Long Island theatre students. Community Theatre, giving back to the theatre community!”

Though he has only just formed the organization, Simon is hoping that the BC/EFA show will be the first of many successful events inspiring volunteerism among Long Island’s youth through live theatre.  Simon has already inspired students from over 14 high schools to take part in the event, and his twin brother, Jacob (who was also in GRINCH), will serve as the show’s Artistic Director.

While this is the first event, he is hoping that it will only be one of many successful fundraising events supporting live theatre.

ALIST is looking for businesses on Long Island to partner with them in their mission.

“We need printers for programs, sponsors for t-shirts and donations that will help to make the evening more profitable. We will have a raffle of all sorts of Broadway memorabilia, but any other donations to make the evening successful are welcome.”
