Michael Urie Shines in Buyer & Cellar Online Benefit

The incomparable Michael Urie brought joy and delightful irreverence into homes around the world with his live-streamed, site-specific performance of Jonathan Tolins’ Buyer & Cellar on Sunday, April 19, 2020.

The performance raised $209,262 for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS’ COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund.

The performance starred Urie as Alex, the sole employee of Barbra Streisand’s private shopping mall in the basement of her Malibu mansion. Urie transformed his apartment living room into the site-specific set. Urie won Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Awards for the show’s original Off-Broadway run in 2013.

The show was directed by Nic Cory, based on the original production by Stephen Brackett. The livestream direction was by Paul Wontorek. The performance was produced by Broadway.com in partnership with Pride Plays and Rattlestick Playwrights Theater.

The money raised supports Broadway Cares’ COVID-19 Emergency Assistance Fund, administered by The Actors Fund, which assists those in the entertainment community dealing with health care crises and immediate financial needs in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic and work shutdown. With every passing day theaters remain dark, entertainment and performing arts professionals face unprecedented health and financial challenges requiring urgent attention and resources.
