It was an unforgetable Mother’s Day celebration. Ten of the most delightful and delectable male dancers from Broadway Bares commemorated the holiday by stripping to their skivvies in the 2014 edition of Broadway Bares: Solo Strips. Delivering a tantalizing peek at the sumptuous Broadway Bares season, the 10 men and their special “mother” – drag queen Kizha Carr – raised $16,140 by performing choreographed stripteases before a capacity crowd Sunday, May 11, 2014, at BPM Nightclub in NYC. There were the sensual dances, like Ryan Worsing’s flirty, Fosse-inspired strip that seduced the audience with its sinuous moves. Callen Bergmann’s suave, spy-themed strip, set to Nancy Sinatra’s classic “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down),” found him acrobatically stripping from a white suit to shiny black booty shorts. In a surprising twist, Julius Rubio did a reverse strip, starting nearly naked and self-flagellating in a darkened room only to add vestiments that ultimately shocked the audience as he revealed himself to be a priest headed to mass.

Ricky Schroeder started his performance in drag as a voodoo-fearing woman before revealing his masculine body underneath. Todd Hanebrink transformed from punk to a diva in heels, complete with a beaded thong. Dennis Stowe turned from a mild-mannered janitor into a hip-hop-rocking cleaning machine as he found a few inspired uses for his trusty mop.

Joshua Michael Brickman started the evening off with a flash as a chiseled photographer looking for the perfect shot and Michael Scirrotto dominated the stage in little more than a harness and a leather thong.

Anthony Rooar DeCarlis emerged from the wings on a scooter and sporting an oversized baby bonnet and onesie. The baby play quickly made way for an adult-themed dance with toy snakes and an oversized milk bottle.

Carr, portrayed by Terren Wooten Clarke of Broadway’s The Book of Mormon, ushered the audience through the evening’s buff buffet, entertaining the crowd herself with live singing, jokes and fabulous costumes.

Throughout the show, Vince Oddo played the role of Carr’s hunky son, an ultimate momma’s boy who progressively lost pieces of his costume as the night went on.

Following the stripteases, Carr served as “rotation master,” encouraging the audience to make individual donations as all of the performers freestyle danced on the stage. Following “rotation,” Tony-winning director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell, Broadway Bares‘ executive producer and creator, joined the cast onstage to thank the audience for an incredible evening.

Broadway Bares: Solo Strips was directed by Tony Spinosa.

Solo Strips is a return to the roots of Broadway Bares. In 1992, Mitchell, then a performer in The Will Rogers Follies, organized a benefit burlesque show featuring himself and friends performing original strips at a bar for a $10 donation plus whatever tips the audience gave the dancers.

Broadway Bares: Solo Strips is a sexy tease for Broadway Bares, one of BC/EFA’s annual signature events. This year’s edition, Broadway Bares: Rock Hard!, will feature New York’s most desirable dancers directed by Nick Kenkel, who also directed last year’s Broadway Bares.

Broadway Bares: Rock Hard! will be Sunday, June 22, with two performances only at 9:30 pm & Midnight at Hammerstein Ballroom, located in the Manhattan Center at 311 West 34th Street in NYC. Special celebrity guests will be announced in June. Get tickets.
