Saks & Broadway Cares Create Holiday ‘Theater of Dreams’
Broadway moved a few blocks east for an evening when Saks Fifth Avenue unveiled its storied holiday window display and light show with the razzle-dazzle of 124 shimmering, high-spirited Broadway dancers.
The magical, traffic-stopping performance on November 19, 2018, ushered in New York City’s holiday season as the dancers kicked off Saks’ holiday theme, dubbed “Theater of Dreams.”
Invited special guests – including legend Chita Rivera, Broadway veteran Michelle Williams and newcomer Peppermint – watched the gold and silver sequined performers light up Fifth Avenue alongside television personalities Rachel Brosnahan from The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Nico Tortorella from Younger and Queer Eye’s Antoni Porowski.
“You could have knocked me over when all those beautiful dancers burst through Saks’ doors and into the street in their amazing, thrilling routine,” Rivera said. “It was as if the best of Broadway transported itself by magic from 42nd Street to Fifth Avenue in an explosion of gorgeous, youthful creative energy. It brought tears to my eyes. Every one of them, in their sparkling costumes, giving us their very best as only dancers can. I felt like I had 124 children keeping the tradition of the two things I love the most alive: Broadway and family. I will remember them all and the moment forever.”
Over a year in the making, the fantastical show was an ode to the grandeur of the Broadway stage. The musical performance was directed by Michael Lee Scott and choreographed by Tammy Colucci. As part of the partnership to create the evening, Saks Fifth Avenue made a generous donation to Broadway Cares.
“We’re honored Saks invited us to join them in this special celebration and are particularly appreciative of Saks’ support for those who’ve been marginalized and simply need a kind, helping hand during the holidays and all-year round,” Broadway Cares Executive Director Tom Viola said.
Marc Metrick, president of Saks Fifth Avenue, said: “As we reimagine our iconic Fifth Avenue windows and celebrate the holiday season with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS this year, we hope to connect with people in a meaningful way while helping those in need.”
